my new course
I’m not exaggerating–the past three weeks have been hectic to me. Fortunately, all my students have been excellent and supportive (THANK YOU EVERYONE!!). I wish I could devote most of my time to teaching, yet it’s just not realistic to say that.
Anyway. So, that also explains why I haven’t been able to keep this website updated as often as I would have wished.
What’s new then. Hmm. I’ve been doing some research on teaching academic English. This is different from teaching my other classes because for this I have to explain much more in class about some rules, and besides this could be a little dry too for students because after all it’s serious stuff they’re gonna be writing.
I will make it fun. Fun things can be learned faster.

Sing a sad song and turn it around…
Kevin introduced this song to me (and everyone) in class:
Bad Day by Daniel Powter
I was slightly upset and went pensive… I went out to some shops and in one of them the staff there happened to be listening to this very song!
I didn’t buy anything, but I walked home in a better mood.
Music brings delights. Thanks to Kevin, and Powter.

Today’s class
I was given some honest comments in class by students today, and it was great that students felt they could come to me and, in a way, help me improve my teaching, in order to suit their needs.
Now I must think about how to speak faster and use more complicated vocabulary (and treat them as a class of level 2+ students)…
Indeed they are an outstanding class, and deserve my efforts!

Hello class! Let’s speak lots in class!
Welcome, everyone! I’m sure you can’t wait to start chatting on some interesting topics with your new classmates. Let’s use the class hours to practise using English to communicate with each other. Hopefully this will be a pressure-free environment.
Our textbook this term is Smart Choice 2 published by Oxford University Press. We study one unit each week, and there are a few extra speaking activities, as well as listening tasks. Be prepared, and speak lots!!

The new term!
This term, for our 讀小說學英文 class, we will begin by reading a short story by Ernest Hemingway (海明威, 1899-1961). My dear students, I hope you’ll enjoy this term!
I hope in class we can have some great discussions. This, of course, requires everyone to join in. Please don’t be shy, and try to do so when you feel ready. In the course plan I put down that:
Expectations: This module presupposes that students have an interest in reading. Students are expected to prepare a little for each class, and to take part in class discussion. Each student is encouraged to make a 10-minute presentation to introduce one short story from the textbook. This presentation can be replaced by a short written report of no more than 350 words.

Time flies (and keep up the hard work, everyone!)
Ooh… I can’t quite believe it’s almost the end of the term!
Plus, I can’t forget those times I was asked questions that I failed to answer immediately in class. Class, thank you for putting up with me!!
It feels like a summer break already, as it’s so boiling… but this year I shall take no breaks. I am in no mood for a holiday, but a couple of friends are visiting, then we do have plans to travel in this beautiful (and hot and humid and sunny) island for a bit… I am taking one of them to teach with me in class while she’s here, hey hey, this shall be super cool.
Have a great summer!!

Tom’s Diner by Suzanne Vega
In class today we tried to sing a song together.
Some of the lyrics are attached in the following:
I am sitting in the morning at the diner on the corner. I am waiting at the counter for the man to pour the coffee. And he fills it only halfway, and before I even argue, he is looking out the window at somebody coming in. ‘It is always nice to see you,’ says the man behind the counter to the woman who has come in. She is shaking her umbrella. And I look the other way, as they are kissing their hellos, I’m pretending not to see them and instead I pour the milk.

Think about what you say!
Some students might feel the lessons are far too easy, but, like I said many times in class, we use the exercises to review what we already learned before. Through using the easy sentence structures, we can become familiar with spoken English, and gradually feel more natural when using this foreign language.
I am sure you have a lot of interesting things to say!
